In 2022, master’s students from the MADE program took an innovative approach in conducting research on climate adaptation.
They mapped out the needs and desires regarding climate adaptation and greening in the Sloterdijken area.
In December of that same year, the results were presented during an inspiring lunch for participants and interested parties. During this participant lunch, the students walked us through their research and gave a preview of the climate adaptation tool that was in development.
This tool has been available online since January 2023 and can be viewed and used here.
The tool (website) offers a step-by-step approach with information, a calculator, and a communication kit to contribute to the transformation toward a climate-adaptive business district.
Increasingly extreme weather conditions — such as heat waves or heavy rainfall — are becoming a growing challenge that business parks are increasingly ill-equipped to handle. Fortunately, there are many solutions, some of which may be perfect for your company!
One concrete measure to contribute to a climate-adaptive business district is the construction of green parking spaces.
Parking areas are often still made of concrete. Water cannot pass through it, which can lead to damage and an increased risk of flooding. Concrete also retains heat.
With rising summer temperatures, this is an issue that must be addressed.
Green parking spaces allow water to drain and help reduce heat stress. It’s an easy-to-implement measure to green, make more sustainable, and actively engage in climate adaptation!
There are many opportunities for climate adaptation in the Sloterdijken area.
Collaboration is crucial to seize these opportunities and implement impactful measures.
Entrepreneurs in Sloterdijken, of course, each have their own tasks, responsibilities, properties, and interests when it comes to climate adaptation.
But keep in mind: most measures are only effective when implemented collectively. That’s why it’s important to align everyone’s interests and tools and work together toward a climate-resilient Sloterdijken.
Collaboration is essential to make a business district climate-resilient.
To make (initial) progress and map out where the opportunities lie, Green Business Club Sloterdijken will continue this project in 2024.
In the meantime, we’ve already held several brainstorming sessions on climate adaptation in the area, together with SPATwater. A proposal for a concrete approach was drafted in spring 2024, and we are ready to move forward with implementing the plan…
