Project Overview

Green Oasis Program 2

Green Oasis Sloterdijk focuses on greening, revitalizing, and climate-proofing the Sloterdijk Nieuw-West business park—a highly paved area facing heat stress and water-related challenges.

Between 2023 and 2024, the first greening initiatives were launched: Green Oasis 1 proved to be a success! Local entrepreneurs, government bodies, and partners like Weerproof Amsterdam actively contributed. Now – starting October 2024 – Green Oasis 2 is underway!

On this project page, you’ll find more information about the new initiatives and collaborations being launched to structurally improve sustainability in the area.

Climate Challenges in Sloterdijk Nieuw-West:

Rising Heat Stress and Water Issues

Sloterdijk Nieuw-West is already experiencing heat stress and water-related challenges, which are expected to increase in the coming years. This is due to climate change, urbanization, and specific characteristics of the area such as limited green space and low elevation.

Climate models (KNMI scenarios '23) predict more frequent and intense heatwaves, with cities being the hardest hit. Winter rainfall and the intensity of summer storms are also expected to increase, putting more pressure on the water system and raising the risk of flooding.

Adaptation and sustainable solutions are essential to tackle these challenges.

Opportunities

“We’ve gained momentum after Green Oasis 1: opportunities are mapped out and entrepreneurs are on board.”

From the Green Business Club (GBC) Sloterdijken, we see both the potential of the area and a willingness among stakeholders to collaborate. A partnership has been launched with Nieuw-West borough, the Department of Spatial Planning & Sustainability, and local businesses. Now we’re building on this momentum with concrete next steps.

There is readiness for collaboration and shared funding. Beyond reducing heat stress and water issues, Green Oasis 2 also contributes to biodiversity and overall livability.

Green Oasis 1 laid a strong foundation. This project aims to spread the enthusiasm for greening further across all of Sloterdijk Nieuw-West. Onward to (continued) implementation!

Approach and Steps: Green Oasis Sloterdijk 2

From the first project, potential greening locations on both public and private land have been mapped out in the opportunity map. Stakeholders have been connected, and there is strong motivation to green the area.

Step 1: Prioritize Low-Hanging Fruit – Where Can We Break Ground First?

  • Inventory of high-priority sites with strong potential (based on the opportunity map).
  • Evaluate feasibility and impact per location.
  • Draft a phased implementation plan.

Step 2: Detailed Planning and Preparation of Greening Measures

  • Develop technical specifications and design details (including maintenance).
  • Define the (financial) contributions of businesses.
  • Select appropriate plant species and materials.
  • Closely involve municipal management in plans for public spaces.

Step 3: Assess Feasibility Based on Steps 1 and 2

  • Communicate with stakeholders about planned work and timelines.

Step 4: Execute Greening Measures

  • Implement greening measures and ensure transfer to long-term management.
  • Document and share results and successes to inspire others.
